7 Steps To A Thriving Laundry Routine

In this post we are going to discuss the “7 Steps To A Thriving Laundry Routine” We all have to start somewhere. Over the years I have tried multiple laundry routines but, this laundry routine is the to one that has stuck. It is effective and you don’t have to worry about laundry piles that are so overwhelming you feel hopeless…

I have definitely seen that happen in not only my home but hearing from other homemakers…

In our home, our laundry routine consists of at least 2-3 loads of laundry per day, because we have 9 people in our home. In a house of 4-6 people, one load from start to finish should be enough.

So, I’ll break it down here into an easy-to-follow step-by-step laundry routine.

So, without further ado…

#1 Run a load of laundry before bed.

This is a must, this step is SUPER easy to do, it will take you just a couple of minutes. Every single night before you go to bed, make sure there is a load of laundry running. It makes all the difference in the world.

#2 Move it to the dryer or hang it on the line in the morning.

Get it in the dryer or if it’s a beautiful sunny day, and you have a line then hang it out. I love both methods! Either way, get it drying as soon as possible.

#3 Start another load of laundry.

Very straightforward, run another load of laundry, and don’t forget this step. Switching the laundry over will become such a habit you won’t even skip a beat. It will be like making that fresh cup of morning coffee every single day, that is how easy it will be to remember.

#4 When the first load is dry take it out and sort it RIGHT AWAY.

If you are worried about perfection, then this part may take about 5 minutes to fold your laundry. I am not worried about perfection, so it takes me 3 minutes or less to fold the laundry.

#5 Repeat this every single day.

Based on the size of your washer and how many people you have in your home, that will depend on how many loads you will need to run. For us, it’s between one and three loads a day. I also do cloth diapers, so if it is a cloth diaper washing day, then chances are it could end up being four loads.

#6 The secret is doing each load from start to finish.

Immediately. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you should just save it for when you have time later, that time rarely comes and when it does you are often overwhelmed with all the other tasks you have to get to that laundry will just landup being piled in a laundry basket somewhere.

#7 Don’t Overwhelm Your Laundry Room.

Several years ago, I made the decision to not keep our dirty laundry in the laundry room, with the exception of wash rags, kitchen rags, bathroom rags, and towels. I bought each bedroom a basket, one for the boy’s room, the girls’ room, and our bedroom. This took my overwhelm level to an all-time low when it came to maintaining the laundry.

I could now go from room to room, as I was ready, and because everyone had been trained to put their laundry in the basket, I could often gauge in the morning how many loads of laundry I was going to need to put through that day.

BONUS TIP: If you ever have laundry that has a foul smell, ie gas on your husband’s jeans, a mold smell, a “laundry that didn’t get all the way dried” smell… Add a 1/2 cup of white vinegar to your laundry in addition to your detergent.

I truly hope this was helpful to you as a homemaker. I know after 16 years of running my own home that habits, routines, and rhythms are the bedrock of a well-organized home.

Until Next Time, Happy Homemaking!

Only one life to offer,

Andrea
